Which Invisalign treatment plan is right for you?

Invisalign is the most popular clear aligner system on the market for teens and adults dreaming of a straighter smile. While the average person is probably familiar with the very basics of how Invisalign works — a series of clear aligners move teeth into place — a surprising number don’t know that Invisalign isn’t necessarily a one-size-fits-all treatment plan.

Invisalign treatment offers multiple treatment systems for maximum results.

While all Invisalign systems serve the same purpose of readjusting the alignment of your teeth, there are a few different treatment options based on your individual needs for your smile.

In general, Invisalign is able to treat mild to moderate bite issues, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, gaps between teeth, and crowding, just to name a few. The clear aligners do have some limitations, though the typical teen or adult with crooked teeth is likely a candidate.

Invisalign systems are extremely effective at their job. Not only do the clear aligners move teeth quickly, but the additional benefit of being able to remove the aligners for eating and brushing also ensures better oral health during treatment. While many become interested in Invisalign because of its subtle nature, the other benefits are certainly enticing too.

Because Invisalign is all about helping people get the best results possible in the least amount of time, they offer a variety of different systems with specific needs in mind. This variety allows dentists and orthodontists to choose a system for their patients that will accomplish what they need within the shortest period of time while maintaining a high level of success.

The 5 Common Invisalign Treatment Systems Used for Teen and Adult Patients

Invisalign is surprisingly versatile, and each Invisalign treatment plan and aligner system is unique to each patient. That said, there are five main types of Invisalign treatment programs available.

Invisalign Full

Invisalign Full is the most popular and commonly used system. Of all of the Invisalign types, this system is able to treat the most complex orthodontic issues and relies on the highest number of aligners. Naturally, treatment time for Invisalign Full can last 12 to 18 months in order to achieve complete results.

Invisalign Lite

Invisalign Lite is a step down from Full. It treats moderate orthodontic issues. Total treatment time is about half that of Full, with many patients finishing in seven months or less using 14 or so aligners. Since Lite is faster-paced than Full, it’s perfect for individuals who need quick orthodontic realignment before getting a smile makeover or restorative dental care.

Invisalign Express

Invisalign Express is an option for patients with mild alignment issues. It’s very similar to Lite, but most plans include about 10 aligners and a total treatment time of 6 months or less. This can be a great option for adults with minor problems or who may have had braces as a child but some shifting has occurred since.

Invisalign i7

Invisalign i7 is the newest system available and it’s designed for patients who have minimal orthodontic problems, such as a couple of crooked teeth or gaps between teeth. Using only a set of seven aligners, you can erase your minor flaws in as few as three months.

Invisalign Teens

As the name suggests, Invisalign Teens is designed for teenagers and young adults who want orthodontic care. The aligners have blue dots to show that your teen is wearing them and also to alert when it’s time to change to the next aligner. Your teen’s aligners can also include tooth eruption tabs to compensate for the space needed as teeth shift or rear molars erupt.

Invisalign Attachments and How They’re Incorporated

In addition to the different treatment systems, Invisalign also relies on small tools called attachments. Invisalign SmartForce attachments are barely noticeable tooth-colored shapes adhered directly to your teeth in areas that need extra help. These attachments push against the aligners while they’re being worn to create additional pressure to further the realignment process.

SmartForce attachments that are extremely versatile, come in a variety of shapes, and can be placed anywhere on the teeth aid efficient treatment. These attachments are especially helpful in resolving complex orthodontic issues and reducing overall treatment time.

Not all Invisalign wearers need attachments, so depending on your treatment plan, you may or may not have these on your teeth.
